Temporomandibular Joint (TMJ) and Facial Pain ExpertDysfunction of the TMJs is often the cause of painful clicking, popping, and limited opening during chewing and speaking. Problems with the TMJs may occur as a result of dental manipulations and trauma. There has been much controversy and litigation in this area.
Dr. Jones taught this subject for many years at the University of Southern California, School of Dentistry. Additionally, he has been retained as an expert in many lawsuits. Dr. Jones offers expert diagnosis that seeks to minimize therapy. Most TMJ problems can be resolved with limited therapy. However, many patients are misdiagnosed as there are few practitioners in this area who are educated adequately to prescribe appropriate treatment. Many patients with TMJ and facial pain have more serious issues related to viral infection, nerve dysfunction, sleep disturbance, and medication side-effect. It is not uncommon for patients to receive treatment for “TMJ” with an inaccurate diagnosis. Many patients who seek diagnosis for ostensible TMJ pain are referred to physician specialists in Neurology and Pulmonology for appropriate therapy. Those with true TMJ problems are treated simply with appliances, physical therapy, and bite adjustment. |
